Special Report: Careers in Rural/Remote Australia

19 September 2009

THE past few decades have seen a strong change in Australia’s settlement pattern.

In 1901, people were rushing to rural settings to make a living, but these days the pattern is dominated by urban coastal settlement.

As these areas get increasingly busy, the idea of making a tree change can seem appealing.

And with more people heading from the country to the cities, employment opportunities are set to arise out west.

According to information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ A Picture of the Nation: The Statisticians’ Report on the 2006 Census, in 1911 the focus of the country’s economy was primary production.

A total of 42% of the population was living in rural areas. Factors encouraging this figure included the employment sectors of agriculture, gold mining and rail.

The report stated that by 2006, only 12% of the population lived in rural Australia.

This equates to 2.4 million people.

For city dwellers looking for a tree change, there are certainly plenty of rural and remote regions to discover.
